A New Introduction to the Study and Knowledge of the New Testament
London: T. Becket and P. A. de Hondt, 1767. Hardcover. 2 volumes. 1767-71. viii, 327p; xii, 370p, [1]. Contemporary quarter calf over speckled boards. First edition. A second edition appeared in 1773. See Cornes & Sparke p105. "A third volume was projected, but not published: Harwood waited for the promised issue of a posthumous volume of biblical notes by Chandler, which never appeared". Lowndes II p1009: 'Of this work, written by an Arian dissenting minister, Bishop Marsh observed, as these dissertations display great erudition, and contain much information illustrative of the New Testament, they are certainly to be recommended to the theological student'. Edward Harwood (1729?1794) was an English classical and biblical scholar. Includes the following inscription on the inside front board in volume 1: 'PRESENTED TO OUR WORTHY PASTOR I. B. PEIRCE AS A TOKEN OF AFFECTIONATE GRATEFUL REGARD BY C: E AND P: A A T VANDERKEMP TRENTON JULY 15TH, 1840'. The Pastor was Isaac Bliss Peirce who was Minister at the Unitarian Church of Barneveld, NY until July 5th 1840. The other Cuneira Englebertha Vanderkemp (1785?1865) and Peter A. A. T. Vanderkemp (1789?1857). Both the children of the Dutch born American Patriot Francis Adrian Vanderkemp (1752-1829). Hinges cracked, but holding and corners a little bumped. Headbands rubbed otherwise a fresh clean set with untrimmed foredges. An early hand, presumably Pastor Pierce, created a handwritten table of content on the inside front blanks. An attractive set with an interesting early American and New York State provenance. Very Good. Item #7681
