1789. No Binding. 4to Partially printed broadside. John Nielson in the County of Lincoln and Commonwealth of Massachusetts yeoman grants Power of Attorney to Hugh McLean of Milton in the County of Suffolk and Commonwealth aforesaid Paper maker. Dated March 21st, 1789. County of Lincoln is today located in Maine since it did not become a state until 1820. The document is signed by John Nielsen and witnessed with signatures by Joseph Greenleaf, Abigail Greenleaf. It is also includes the handwritten text 'Suffolk March 21, 1789. Then John Nielson acknowledged the above instrument by him subscribed to be his free will and deed before me' and signed again by Joseph Greenleaf as Justice of the Peace. The relationship between John Nielson and Hugh McLean has not been established. Regarding Hugh McLean, see John Bidwell excellent study 'American Paper Mills 1690-1832' Mass2-3. The document is split along the folds and frayed along the edges. Two small professional paper repairs on the back of the document. The broadside is stored in a protective mylar folder. A fine legal document from the early days of the Republic. Good. Item #7652
