The Library published by Oxford University Press wrote the following review: "Despite its 'rather oblique manner' which, with engaging candor, the author admits to, this is a valuable publication which cannot fail to interest the student of paleography and the amateur of writing books. Mr. Nash was invited by the Club of Odd Volumes to discuss with them his own collection of writing-books, and the present booklet is a report of the causerie. The section covers exactly a century from 1748 to 1848-though it was only possible to examine something over two dozen of 'more than two hundred copybooks and manuals known to have been published during the period covered'.
