Vermischte schriften des Herrn Chr. Mylius

Berlin: Johan Carl Spener, 1754. Hardcover. xlviii, 600p. Contemporary quarter calf over decorative paper covered boards. Two full page engravings as well as a few illustrations in the text. First edition edited by the German critic and dramatist Gotthold Ephraim Lessing (1729-1781). The author, Christlieb Mylius (1722-1754) was as Hugh Barr Nisbet writes p31 'a strange and eccentric figure who, in the remaining years of his short life, played a decisive role in Lessings development. Nisbet writes further that they must have known each other before Leipzig because they were connected through family ties. This work, as Saintsbury writes, p28, runs from Theology to Vivisection. The chief critical piece is a tractate (1743), Von den Reisen und dem Sylbenmasse. Mylius is against rhyme both in Tragedy and in Comedy'. Ex library copy with institutional bookplate and withdrawal stamp. Call numbers neatly added to the spine. Spine a little dry and hinges as well as corners rubbed. Internally clean. Scarce. Good.
