Wales Illustrated in a Series of Views,

London: Jones & Co, 1830. Hardcover. Containing 42 plates with 84 images as well as text. Also includes three loosely inserted steel engravings of landscapes. Contemporary quarter calf over marbled boards and end papers. Henry Gastineau (1791-1876) was born in London to a family of Huguenot descent. It is interesting to note that the volume is signed in a contemporary hand Wm Allen Wall, 10 Howland Street, London on the title page. I have not been able to professionally identify the signature and have it confirmed as that of the New Bedford, MA artist William Allen Wall (1801-1881), I have compared it with the signatures on his art work. It is well known that William Allen Wall was traveling in Europe with his second cousin Ralph Emerson at the time. Both were in England in the 1830s. Marginal stain along the preliminary leaves and some foxing to the engraved illustrations. Hinges cracked, but holding. Overall a nice a copy with a interesting provenance signature. Holloway 61A. Very Good. Item #7399
