The author, Pietro Aretino (1492 ? 1556) was an Italian author, playwright, poet, satirist and apparently also a blackmailer. Grolier Club Catalogue of an Exhibition of Original and Early Editions of Italian Books p8 "He died, according to some accounts, after falling from his chair in a fit of laughter caused by hearing an indecent story about his sisters".
