Jugemens des Savans sur les Principaux Ouvrages des Auteurs

Paris: Charles Moette, 1722. Hardcover. 7 volumes complete. Engraved frontispiece, [20], 4-404p; [6], 680p, [16]; 464p, [4]; 488p; 461, [10]; [4], 555p; [8], 388p, [102]. Contemporary french calf with richly gilt spines and marbled end papers. Red stained fore edges and silk bookmarks. Second edition. First printed in 1685. The author Adrien Baillet (1649 ¿ 1706) was a French scholar and critic. He is now best remembered as a biographer of René Descartes. Balsamo p70 writes "In Bailette's work, we see the experience of the past merging, giving birth to a new methodical approach, no longer that of the simple alphabetical list, but instead a treatise organized according to the nature of the works". Peignot 189-190 argues that despite its faults, it can still be consulted 'fruitfully by those who with to know certain parts of literature". Ebert #1523 is much less kind "This miserable and utterly useless compilation has long since in France been sold as wastepaper". It should be noted that Ebert was far more interested in systematic bibliographical classifications, then what Baillet had provided. Petzholdt p28. Generally a well preserved set. Corners a little bumped and some scratch marks. Label to vol VII missing. From the Library of Bib Coll. Valgir. S. J. with label on the inside front boards. Very Good. Item #7276
