La Verite de La Religion Chretienne demontree par ordre geometrique

Paris: Jean Delaulne, 1717. Hardcover. [70], 350p. Contemporary blue paper covered boards. Generally recognized as one of the best-known French enlightened mainstream apology for faith. The author, Jean Denyse, was Professor of Philosophy at the College of Montaigue. As Jonathan Israel argues p720 in his excellent "Enlightenment Contested: Philosophy, Modernity, and the Emancipation of Man", Denyse "viewed the intellectual crisis in France 'today' as being due to the influence of new, dangerous, and pernicious 'philosophy' creating a situation very different from the prevailing under Louis XIV a behind-the scenes confrontation with 'des athees au milieu du Christianism". It was a struggle against Spinoza and Bayle though especially Spinoza who was viewed as the atheist. See NBG vol 13, col 694. Perennes I col 1211. A few spots, but otherwise internally clean. Small pinholes in the paper covered spine and light rubbing to the boards. Now a very scarce edition partly because of its popular importance at the time. Very Good. Item #7127
