Item #6824 Hody, Humphrey. et Latina Vulgata Libri IV Bibliorum Textibus Originalibus Versionibus Graecis.

Hody, Humphrey

Oxford: Theatro Sheldoniano, 1705. Hardcover. Frontispiece, xxxvi, 664p. Contemporary paneled calf. Rebacked with a modern spine. The first thirty-six pages are printed entirely in Greek. Humphrey Hody (1659-1707) was an English scholar and theologian. Hody's main works are dissertations published in 1685 arguing that Aristeas claim that Jews had translated the Septuagint into Greek was a medieval fabrication. Lowndes II p1080 "A learned and esteemed classical work on the Septuagint to which all subsequent writers have been greatly indebted". Bohn's Catalogue 1841 #10555 "Among the writers of the Septuagint version, no one has displayed ether more knowledge on the subject, or more critical sagacity than Hodius". But, Hody is also known for his dispute with Richard Bentley over orthography. The matter, as White p60 writes in his study on Bentley, pertained to the general principle whether or not the latinizing of Greek words involved the retention of the Greek suffix 'as' or changed it to the declinable Latin 'a'. Internally a fresh clean copy with the hinges repaired and an old bookplate from a University on the inside front board. Otherwise no rubber stamps, or unseemly markings. Wear along the edges with the corners exposed. Rather scarce. Very Good. Item #6824
