He was Professor of Greek at Cambridge (1666-1672). Sandys II p354. Moss writes p456-457 that "the editor greatly enhanced the value of this volume by assistance of two MSS, (one which he obtained from Dr. Bancroft, Archbishop of Canterbudy and the other from the library belonging to Eton College". Moss adds further that Gale greatly enlarged and corrected the Greek Glossary, the index of the Ionic dialect, the chronological annals of Herodotus, and the notes and various readings. Lowndes refers to it p1052 as a "respectable and useful edition". Hoffmann II p371. From the Library of Rev E. Bourchier with bookplate on the inside front board. Binding rather worn and dry. Lacks the maps. Otherwise internally clean. Good. Item #6620
