The Dred Scott Decision, Opinion of Chief Justice Taney, with an introduction
New York: Evrie, Horton & Co, 1859. 48p. Original printed wrappers. 1st edition. The landmark case, Dred Scott v Sandford demonstrated the extreme pro-slavery position of the Court and helped to precipitate the Civil War. Dred Scott, a slave who lived in Rick Island, Illinois and Fort Snelling, Wisconsin, both places were slavery was prohibited, sued for his freedom in 1846. The Supreme Court's decision against Scott exacerbated feelings between the North and South and seriously diminished the Court's credibility in the North. John H. Van Evrie was a physician and strong advocate for slavery, writing several books of scientific racism. Rare. Worldcat locates 14 copies. Light fixing to wrappers, faint, very old water stain to foot, else very good. Item #2573
