Siege de Bergopzoom Commande par Mr. Le Marcehcal de Lowendal

Paris: Basset. Antique copper engraving circa 1750 measuring 9.67" x 17". The city was taken by the French (1747) during the War of the Austrian Succession. Perspective views, or "optical views" were popular in the eighteenth century and when viewed through a n optical device called a zograscope, they had an appearance of three-dimensional depth. if the zograscope had a lens only, the print had to be held vertically for viewing, and it was frequently attached to stiff backing. If it had a lens and a mirror, the print could lie flat on the table, but would be seen as a mirror image. For this reason, many perspective prints had a title printed in reverse at the top of the image. Many had strong coloring that looked appealing when viewed in low light. A fresh clean engraving with just a little marginal dusting and a few spots on the back. Item #2466
