Perspective view Middelburgh, Zeeland

Vue de la Ville et du Canal de Middelburgh Capitale de la Zelande

Paris: Basset. 10.1" x 16.5" Antique hand colored engraving circa 1750-1770. Perspective views, or "optical views" were popular in the eighteenth century and when viewed through an optical device called a zograscope, they had an appearance of three-dimensional depth. If the zograscope had a lens only, the print had to be held vertically for viewing, and it was frequently attached to stiff backing. If it had a lens and a mirror, the print could lie flat on the table, but would be seen as a mirror image. For this reason, many perspective prints had a title printed in reverse at the top of the image. many had strong hand-coloring that looked appealing when viewed in low light. An attractive clean image. Item #2463
