Henry Jarvis Raymond (1820 – 1869) was an American journalist, newspaper publisher, and politician who co-founded both the Republican Party and The New York Times. The NYT, writes the DAB vol xiv, p409, was immediately successful: it appealed not only to those who disliked violence and personalities, but also to many who were repelled by the Heralds "lack of principle" and Tribune's excess of it.
