On the Adaptation of External Nature to the Physical Condition of Man

London: William Pickering, 1833. xvi, 375p. 19th century quarter calf over marbled boards. Marbled end papers and a richly gilt spine. John Kidd (1775 ? 1851) was an English physician, chemist and geologist who took a leading role in Oxford's "scientific awakening" in the early years of the 19th century. Part of The Bridgewater Treatises. The 8th Earl of Bridgewater (1756-1829) had bequeathed 8000 pounds for the writing and publishing of specific works "on the Power, Wisdom, and Goodness of God, as Manifested in the Creation". Eight authors were selected through the assistance of the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Bishop of London. The volumes were published by William Pickering printed in 1000 copies by Charles Whittingham between 1833 and 1840. This volume is the second in the series. Not in Keynes.
