Jonathan Toup (1713-1785) was an English philologist and classical scholar.A celebrated edition. Dibdin p180 writes 'Throughout the whole work there is much erudition and excellent criticism on the original displayed, and it is likewise so elegantly printed, that it may be recommended as one of the most admirable editions of a classical author which any country has yet produced'. Toup's name, writes Clarke, is almost forgotten today, but among his contemporaries he enjoyed a considerable reputation.
