Bound by "Mansell successor to Hayuay" with small stamp on the inside verso of the marbled front end paper. First edition of George Ticknor's (1791-1871) important work on Spanish literature. Ticknor was an American author and educator who helped modernize the curriculum at Harvard. (Britannica) He also acted while in Europe as President Thomas Jefferson's book agent. Ticknor had visited Monticello in 1815 and Jefferson was very impressed by his knowledge. He described him as "the best bibliograph I have met with" See p558 Hayes 'The Road to Monticello'.
