Reprint of the Original Letters from Washington to Joseph Reed during the American Revolution referred to in the pamphlets of Lord Mahon and Mr. Sparks

Philadelphia: A. Hart, Late Carey and Hart, 1852. Fair. 155p. Disbound. This volume was published as a result of a controversy over Jared Sparks changes in Washington's letters some ten years earlier. It includes two inserted handwritten letters. One addressed to William Reed from the American historian and statesman George Bancroft (1800-1891). The letter is dated October 1852 and George Bancroft is advising William Reed to republish the letter from Washington to Joseph Reed with "with infinite care". Since the preface is dated November 1852, one can argue that it may have been George Bancroft who was behind the republishing. The second letter is from W. Reed confirming that he has sent a pamphlet to Bancroft. While the sewing is intact and firm, the boards and spine are missing. Its otherwise internally clean. Item #10522
