Item #10457 L'Eloge de La Folie. Erasmus.

L'Eloge de La Folie

1757. xxiv, 222p. Contemporary calf with a gilt ruled spine and marbled end papers. No place or publishers mentioned. A French translation from the Latin which was first published in 1511. The original Latin edition was first written in 1509 and its interesting that Erasmus published in his own name such a bold attack on the abuses of the church and state. Pope Leo had read the original as well many in the church hierarchy as well, the theologians, as P.S. Allen writes, "were indignant" Its quite possible that even 200 years later, the theologians in France objected to this work which may explain why there i no place or publisher mentioned on the title page. Cohen-deRicci p348. A fresh clean copy with occasional spots. Item #10457
