Handwritten Legal letter of recommendation. Scott County, Kentucky 1822

A two page handwritten letter measuring 7.5" x 9 1/4" with a vax seal attached and dated October 8th, 1822. The first page is a letter of recommendation for Silas P. Holbrook, an attorney practicing at the Court House in Scott County in Kentucky. The letter states "Where as Silas P. Holbrook hath produced to us, from the County of Scott a certificate of his honesty. The letter continuous explaining that he has been examined and agreed as to his competency. The letter concludes that this conclusion "signed and sealed as Circuit Court Judges". The letter is signed and dated J. Clark and J. Bledsoe. Despite attempts, I have not been able to verify for certainty that these signatures are Judge and later Governor James Clark (1779-1839) and Judge Jesse Bledsoe (1776-1836). The letter mentioning the Circuit Court in the concluding sentence prior to the signatures is the only clear indicator. On the verso of the letter of recommendation is a handwritten confirmation that Silas P. Holbrook entered the Court in Ohio County, Virginia and took the oath of office as Counsel and attorney to practice. This text is dated November 4th, 1822 and signed W. Chapline. A fresh clean document with a small spot on the front page from the seal. Item #10406
