From the Library of Leo & Helen Leventritt with bookplates in all four volumes. Henry St. John 1st Viscount Bolingbroke (1678-1751) was a British Tory politician and philosopher. His writing had a profound influence on Thomas Jefferson. William Sterne Randall writes in his biography of Jefferson that he was reading Bolingbroke's philosophical works in his youth and would eventually "adopt Bolingbroke's philosophical views". In a letter to his cousin Francis Eppes in 1821 he wrote: Bolingbroke "was called indeed a tory, but his writings prove him a stronger advocate for liberty than any of his countrymen". See Randall, Thomas Jefferson A Life p14, 85-86, Thomas Jefferson's Writings p1451-1452. Scattered foxing, mostly marginal otherwise a very well preserved set in an attractive binding. An unfortunate scrape mark on the board to volume one. Item #10404
