London: Saunders and Outley, 1836. xliv, 333p: viii, 462p. Quarter brown morocco over marbled boards and end papers. Second edition of the first translation into English. First printed in 1835. Bound by the William Worsfold Bindery with their small rubber stamp on the verso of the front marbled end paper. Translated by Henry Reeve Esq (1813-1895), a journalist and writer. See Encyclopedia Britannica vol 22, p975: While studying in Geneva in 1829, he mixed with in the societal circles in the city. While visiting London in 1831, he was introduced to Thackeray and Carlyle as well as other literary figures. Then off to Paris in 1831 where he met others followed by Italy. When he visited Dresden in 1835, he became a member of Madame de Circourt's salon where he met De Tocqueville. The preface to the first American edition published in 1840 states that "The following work by De Tocqueville has attracted great attention throughout Europe, where it is universally regarded as a sound, philosophical, impartial, and remarkably clear and distinct view of our political constitutions, and our manners, opinions, habits, as influencing or influenced by those institutions".
