1796. A handwritten document measuring 6.75" x 6.75" Requesting return for Extra Whiskey for a detachment on standing fatigue which refers to long, static duties such as guard posts, manual labor, or maintenance. A "gill" was a standard liquid measurement (¼ pint), part of the daily alcohol rations authorized by Congress for soldiers. The fort at Camp Greene Ville which is current day Greenville, Ohio was built 1793 during the American Indian wars. A well-preserved document with four folds. Dated Green Ville 24 January 1796, six months after the Treaty of Greenville, a peace accord signed August 3, 1795, between the U.S. and Native American tribes (including the Shawnee, Miami, and Delaware), which in effect ceded much of Ohio to U.S. settlement. The troops were more than likely part of a residual garrison force maintaining the fort as well as enforcing the treaty's terms. Kept in a plastic folder. Item #10294
