Baynard, John

Philadelphia: 1779. A partially printed document signed John Baynard as Speaker of the House. 1 page. 8.5" x 6.75". Approving expenditures for Thomas Hartley. Slight toning and two folds otherwise a clean document. John Baynard (1738-1807) was born in Maryland, but settled in Philadelphia 1756. He became a prominent politician and merchant. While he was against radical measures in the break against Great Britain, he was active in the Revolution from the start. He also presided in many meetings discussing the new Pennsylvania Constitution. He served at the Battle of Princeton and as Member of the Council of Safety, visited George Washington at Valley Forge. Thomas Hartley (1748-1800) was a Representative from Pennsylvania. A member of the provincial convention at Philadelphia in 1775. He also served in the Revolutionary War as lieutenant colonel of Irvine's regiment and as colonel of the Sixth Pennsylvania Regiment in 1776. He commandeered an expedition against the Indians in 1778 and served as member of the State house of representatives in 1778. Item #10284
