Paris: Michael Bobin & Nicolas Le Gras, 1668. [56], 477p. Contemporary calf with a richly gilt spine with raised bands and six compartments. With 22 full page woodcuts and numerous woodcut illustrations in the text. Rene Descartes (1596-1650) was a French philosopher, scientist and mathematician. He became a favorite of Queen Christina in Sweden who invited him in 1650. He tutored the Queen in philosophy at 5am morning sessions in the middle of winter. He died of pneumonia within four months. Spine chipped at the head and foot. Lower front hinge cracked but holding firm. Old oval stain on the front board. Small oval stain at the inner margin affecting a few preliminary leaves, otherwise internally clean. A scarce edition. Item #10100
