Collections and Notes 1867-1876
London: Reeves and Turner, 1876. xi, 498p. Contemporary quarter polished black leather over purple roan boards with a burgundy label. Marbelised foredge. Hazlitt does take a slightly different approach in this work compared to the earlier Handbook by personally having examined and cataloged each volume which he describes. His preface makes for rather interesting reading as he defines the early English books into different classes - Direct importance, indirect or collateral importance and bibliographical curiosity. He finds of these only the first and second categories to repay literary inquirers while the third represents nothing more than cabinet specimens that are 'worth what they fetch'. Today we have a fourth category - the non-intrinsic decorative value often requested as endless yards of leather in specific colors to match existing furniture décor and oh, yes. must be in English! Some spots on the preliminary leaves and the last. Only slight general wear to the binding as a result of use otherwise a clean fresh copy of a rather interesting work. Very Good. Item #10012
