First edition of this abridgment of Schoolcraft's work, with 100 engraved and lithographic plates, including a color-printed frontispiece, ten hand-colored plates and a hand-colored map. In 1847 Congress authorized School craft, explorer and former superintendent of Indian Affairs in Michigan, to collect historical and statistical information on the country's native inhabitants. First published in 1851 in six massive quarto volumes as Historical and Statistical Information Respecting the Indian Tribes of the united States, Schoolcraft's work was intended to be a great encyclopedia of Information relating to the AMerican ABorigines. It has indeed performed a very important service for Indian history, in collecting and preserving an immense amount of historic data. Sabin 77849, Howes D472. From the Library of Gordon W.
