Sawyer Ltd in catalogue #91 item #246 writes: "The Legends: deservedly rank among the masterpieces of humorous literature and retain to this day their popularity. Of the Author Dr Garbett says, Barham carries geniality to the verge of exuberation. He riots in fancy and frolic, and his inexhaustible faculty of grotesque rhyming is but the counterpart of his intellectual fertility in the domain of farcical humour".
