Rev Samuel West [1731-1807] was a Congregationalist minister of Dartmouth (now New Bedford), and later a chaplain in the army. The service in the army that gained him the most renown was that of deciphering for Washington a treasonable code letter send by Dr Benjamin Church and intended for a British Admiral at Newport. After the war, West engaged in the Calvinistic-Arminian controversy.This essay was a reply to Jonathan Edwards Freedom of the Will. Of all the replies, West's was the most thorough and the most persuasive. See DAB p12. vol XX. One inch tear at the inner margin of the title page with no loss of text.
