Recollections of the Life of the Late Right Honourable Charles James Fox
New York: E. Sargeant, 1807. Hardcover. vi, [1], 8-244p. Late 19th century quarter calf over paper covered boards with marbled end papers. Red and green labels on the spine. I also have a defective copy of this title that has a title page variant which I have been unable to confirm whether it is documented in bibliographical records. This particular copy posted has the phrase "To which is added the Character of Mr. Fox by R. B. Sheridan". This title page also lists the following publishers underneath 'New York'; "Printed for E. Sargeant, 39 Wall Street; R.B Hopkins and Co, WM P. Farrand; Philadelphia: and Geo. Hill. Baltimore. 1807. Printed by D & G Bruce". The other title page does not include the notation referencing Sheridan, but instead includes a quote from Shakespeare "I must not think. There are evils enough to darken all his goodness; His faults in him seem as the spots of heaven, More fiery by night's blackness". In addition, all the publishers listed underneath 'New York' except for E. Sargeant, 39 Wall Street has been omitted. The text blocks are otherwise the same. One can possibly argue that the second title page showing just E. Sargeant is a second issue for a more limited market . Title page is attached at the inner margin to the front blank. Paper partially browned with sporadic foxing throughout. A couple of leaves from the preface replaced from another copy.Small tear in the front marbled end paper. From the Library of Princeton Publisher Edward M. Crane with his bookplate on the inside front board. Front hinge cracked, but holding firm. Very Good. Item #003785
