Amsterdam: Ex officina Elzeviriana, 1656. Hardcover. Engraved title page, 336p. Contemporary vellum over boards. Reprint of the 1643 Elzevier edition printed in Leyden. From the Library of the theological scholar Konrad Arnold Schmid (1716-1789) with his signature on the inside front board. Schmid is mainly known for his friendship with the poet Gotthold Ephraim Lessing with whom he maintained a regular correspondence. Also from the Library of Karl Philipp Christian Schönemann (1801-1855), librarian at the Herzog August Bibliothek with his stamp C.P.C. Schönemann on the verso of the title page and with signature dated 1827. There is an additional signature of A. Chr. Bartels that I have not been able to identify. Two leaves with contemporary handwritten notes have been inserted after the title page. Some dusting as well as a old few stains on the boards. Aside for some contemporary underlinings in the text, a fresh clean copy with unusual provenances. Willems #1207; Rahir #1233:. Very Good. Item #003748
