Hurst and Blackett, 1856. Hardcover. vi, 340p; 352p. Contemporary tan calf over marbleized boards. Richly gilt spine in compartments with burgundy and green labels and marbleized end papers. INCLUDES AN INSERTED LETTER FROM GEORGE THORNBURY DATED 1873. The author, George Walter Thornbury (1828-1876) is described in the DNB vol 19, p769 "as associated Charles Dickens as a contributor to 'Household Words'; and when 'All the Year Round' was inaugurated, he proved to be Charles Dickens most valuable contributors". Includes Thomas Westwood's (1814-1888) bookplate in each volume. Westwood is most known for his Bibliotheca Piscatoria. Quaritch in his Dictionary of English Book Collectors part xii p30 writes that Westwood's angling collection was sold in 1871 and the rest by private contract in 1897. Westwood's initials are also stamped in decorative script on the inside front blanks. Some light rubbing to the edges of the boards with the edges exposed as well as some very light rubbing to the raised bands on the spines. One inch tear on the inside front marbled paper without any loss. Otherwise internally a fresh clean copy in a very attractive bindings and with two notable provenances. Very Good. Item #003693
