¿ibbur ha-Meshi¿ah ve-ha-Tishboret [Manuscripts]
Hardcover. [90];[140]. 19th century marbled paper covered boards with a new cloth spine. Marveled end papers. A pre-1850 handwritten copy of the MS "Treatise on Measurement and Calculation" by the medieval Jewish scholar Abraham bar Hiyya, also known by his latin name Savasorda. Very little is known about Abraham bar Hiyya (d. c. 1136), who was a Spanish philosopher, mathematician, astronomer, and translator.His work on mathematics became a standard. The original MS was translated into Latin in 1145 by Plato Tiburtinus, a 12th century Italian mathematician, astronomer and translator. There is no indication in the text who copied the MS, but is done in a clear patient script with only occasional mistakes. Also includes occasional geometrical drawings in the margins. BOUND WITH: A copy of an MS listing MSS in Arabic, Physics and Mathematics at Bibliotheque Nationale. The original MS is by Antoine Galland (1646- 1717). This MS is written in different hand then the first and a few leaves are just a little chipped at the edges. The script is clear and legible. Some left over remains on the inside front board of old tape repair otherwise a good copy with only a few occasional spots. From the Library of H.P.
