Q. Horatius Flaccus, Ex Recensione & Cum Notis Atque Emendationibus Richardi Bentleii, Editio Altera

Amsterdam: Wetstein, 1713. LARGE PAPER ISSUE. Engraved frontispiece, title page, [20], 717p, 239p. Contemporary burgundy morocco with the Golden Fleece monogram on the spine and boards frequently found on books from the Library of Baron Longpierre though a bookplate has been removed from the inside front board. A gilt ruled spine and along the edges of the boards. Marbelised end papers. Engraved frontis piece, title page, engraved portrait, [28], 444p, Index, engraved plate, title page, [8], 87p. Index. The second edition edited by Richard Bentley (1662-1742), Master of Trinity College, Cambridge. Moss p21 comments that the second edition includes additional notes and the index of Treter enlarged and corrected by Verburgius. What was needed for Horace and which had never been done, as R.J. White writes p156, was to draw the reader's attention to interpretation presented by a remarkably pure text and this is what Bentley accomplished. Kenney p72 writes further that if Bentley's own conjectures were to be removed from the text, what remains bears a close resemblance to a modern text of Horace, and there are not many classical editions on or about the year 1711 of which that may be said. Bartholomew & Clark #150. Binding rather worn with edges exposed and hinges cracked with the front board almost detached. Head and foot on the spine worn with modern title label. Some rubbing and abrasions to the boards. Partly browned throughout with some marginal staining affecting principally the second half of the book and the rear board. At one time a very attractive copy which has been misshandled. The binding is, however, repairable. good. Item #003195
