Q. Horatius Flaccus, Ex Recensione & Cum Notis Atque Emendationibus Richardi Bentleii, Editio Altera
Amsterdam: Wetstein, 1713. Contemporary Calf. Engraved frontispiece, title page, [20], 717p, 239p. Contemporary calf with a richly gilt spine and along the edges of the boards. Marbelised end papers. What was needed for Horace and which had never been done, as R.J. White writes p156, was to draw the reader's attention to interpretation presented by a remarkably pure text and this is what Bentley accomplished. Kenney p72 writes further that if Bentley's own conjectures were to be removed from the text, what remains bears a close resemblance to a modern text of Horace, and there are not many classical editions on or about the year 1711 of which that may be said. The second edition edited by Richard Bentley (1662-1742), Master of Trinity College, Cambridge. Bartholomew & Clark #150. Binding a bit rubbed and hinges cracked but holding firm. Otherwise a fresh clean copy internally. Very Good. Item #003193
