A letter in French Dated 1793 and Signed By The French General Jean Etienne Vachier, Called Championnet.

1793. A handwritten letter in French by Jean Étienne Vachier, called Championnet (1762 - 1800). The letter is addressed to 'Brothers and Friends and continues with "I received yesterday letter you sent me and that the republican society of Valence wrote on behalf of the Drome dated August 18th year 1. I read it, like you, with indignation (name scratched out) who did not merit to have a position that should have been given to a Sans-culottes, dares to slander respectable citizens as shown by their virtues and good citizenship while this [name scratched out] has always been considered very suspect, having disarmed and as such been imprisoned because he had abandoned his past at the prison and finally he never gave time to patriotism without making a face. I join with you heartily in showing his conduct and denouncing it to the public. The public disturbances in the Jura have calmed down, the disturbers of the peace arrested, the treacherous administrators dismissed and some of them imprisoned, the Department transferred to Dole, the only district that remained faithful to the law and finally all is in order. The 6th Brigade of la Drome behaved in a satisfactory manner for the People's representative and the Sans Culottes. As I commandeered the armed forces, I can only praise their 'zele' , courage and discipline. The Doubs department, that was poorly structured, has just been reorganized as well as the Districts. There are large mobs in the district of Pontarlier and Saint Hipolite. For the last 2 days, the garrison has sent detachments to trap les Brigades.[unclear]. who left 2 days ago with a detachment of 100 men, have already trapped a mob, made 10 prisoners and killed many. I will leave tomorrow with an imposing armed force, cannon, the Criminal Court and the Guillotine. I can assure you that everything will go well. Chief of the 6th Brigade de la Drome. Championnet. There is a hand written note in a later hand underneath writing - See history of Thiers Volume 3. p27 who says that the light infantry was the only one at Dole. An interesting and rather unique letter addressing an important time period in the life of Championnet. Written on a folio sheet and folded in half and at one time folded in fours. The text is clear though there are a few stains on the front and back. There is a very tiny pin hole in the center of the letter not affecting any letters. Good. Item #003184
