An Undated Letter in French By Léger-Félicité Sonthonax from around 1796
No Binding. An undated letter in French from around 1794 stating that the undersigned person who is the former superintendent delegate of the French government at the island certify that the citizen Gignoux, assistant mayor to the generals of the army of St. Domingo, employed by the commission for a negotiation with the Black chiefs auxiliary to the Spanish, was arrested after the disturbances in June 1794 and that he was released from prison two years later by order of the delegates of the executive Directory. This event must have been related to the 1794 National Convention when they formally abolished slavery and granted civil and political rights to all black men in the colonies. There are some estimates that 100,000 blacks and 24,000 whites died as a result of the disturbances. The letter is signed by Léger-Félicité Sonthonax (1763 - 1813) who is credited for having ended slavery in St, Dominique. Very Good. Item #003173
